Stankovic: South is inseparable part of Serbia

Zoran Stankovic, chairman of the Coordination Body for Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja, has said that the south is an inalienable part of Serbia and there is no room for comparisons between the rights of Serbs in northern Kosovo and the rights of Albanians in Serbia.

"For political reasons, some of the Albanians in south central Serbia want the stability of this part of the country to always remain an issue, and a re perpetually dissatisfied with what has been done," Stankovic said in a statement for the Monday edition of Politika. According to Stankovic, viewed from the position of ordinary people and leaving politics out, there is no basis to the claims that the Albanians are never satisfied. "All rights guaranteed to any national minority in Serbia are also guaranteed to the Albanian community, and in this regard they are equal citizens of this country," he stressed. He said the three municipalities in south central Serbia have many open issues which need to be resolved, but the locals are most troubled by unemployment and low living standards. Almost all businesses in this area are operating with losses, he said, adding that Presevo has a 56 percent jobless rate, Medvedja 46 percent, and Bujanovac 43 percent. This is why Serbia has invested RSD 222 million over the past three years to develop these communities and improve the quality of life of Serbs, Albanians, Roma and other residents, said Stankovic.
