Gasi said the ruling was issued by the Supreme Court of Kosovo based on an appeal.
Three other former members of the paramilitary Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), Nedzmi Krasnici, Naser Krasnici and Naser Salja, Ljimaj's co-defendants in the Klecka case, remained in custody.
Ljimaj and his comrades are accused of killing several civilians and prisoners of war in the village of Klecka in 1998.
On November 24, 2012, the Supreme Court of Kosovo ordered a re-trial of Ljimaj trial and the other three men as it deemed that pieces of evidence provided by the now deceased Agim Zogaj, also known as the 'Witness X', are eligible for consideration.
