She said that the people in the Kosovo north do not live well, stressing this as one of the main reasons why Belgrade and Pristina should settle their issues. The first step should be a normalization of relations, said Ashton. We need to create a status for the Serbs so that they do not feel cut off from society, but rather to know that they are recognized, published on the website of the Slovakian president. The EU foreign policy chief said that the EU will open accession talks with Serbia if the country meets the necessary requirements. Gasparovic said Slovakia would like to see Serbia get a date for the start of EU accession talks as soon as possible. The Slovakian president informed Ashton about the conclusions of a recent meeting of his with Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic and his expectations when it comes to the future development of relations between Belgrade and Pristina. Gasparovic told Ashton that Slovakia's position on Kosovo's independence has not changed, but that he fully supports the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina that she is facilitating. He pointed out that the Western Balkan region is close to Slovakia, and not just geographically, as their policies and activities have long been coordinated and aimed at fulfilling the strategic vision of the region's integration into the EU.
