Only Belgrade and Pristina can find the form to resolve the Kosovo issue, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said Thursday.

At a press briefing, Lukashevich noted that UN Security Council Resolution 1244 remained the basis in the search for a solution to the Kosovo issue.

Russia's principled position regarding Kosovo has not changed: we believe an illegal situation has arisen there, and both sides should strive towards a solution based on Resolution 1244, Lukashevich said when a Tanjug reporter asked how Russia felt about the idea of organizing a new Dayton for Kosovo and about division as one of the possible solutions.

He added that Resolution 1244 has not been abolished, regardless of everything that has occurred outside the legal sphere.

Our position is that only Belgrade and Pristina can find a solution which would make co-existence in the region possible, said Lukashevich.

He recalled that Kosovo was also a topic during the recent meeting of the Russian and Serbian presidents, Vladimir Putin and Tomislav Nikolic, in Sochi.

Even though the focus was not on this issue, it could not be avoided, he said.
