Some masked persons opened fire on one Kosovo Police female officer and one EULEX vehicle injuring a police officer and damaging both vehicles early today. The incident took place in the village of Donje Verage which is located northern Kosovo.

The EU Special Representative Samuel Zbogar and the Head of EULEX Xavier de Marnhac condemned the incident.

"I thoroughly condemn this act of wanton violence. Lives were put at risk. It illustrates and reinforces the need for greater rule of law in this area of Kosovo. The EUSR and EULEX will continue to work on that jointly," Samuel Zbogar said.

The OSCE Mission in Kosovo has also reacted on the incident. Ambassador Werner Almhofer said he strongly condemns the attack on Kosovo police and EULEX.

"The perpetrators deliberately put lives in danger. I am relieved that no one was killed and I wish the injured police officer a speedy recovery," Wener Almhofer said.

A team of EULEX policemen were travelling to Zubin Potok to carry out their normal duties at the local police station when the attack happened. The Kosovo Police vehicle was escorting them.

An investigation has begun.
